瀬戸本業窯　Seto-Hongyo kiln

解説：瀬戸は千数百年に亘り良土の恵みを受け、陶磁器が焼かれた。純白で強度耐火度に優れた陶土は、未だ当地の右に出るものはない。1800年より磁器（新製焼）の生産が始まり、産業の源が築かれ、近世に於いては輸出玩具（ノベルティー）、ニューセラミックスなど新しい分野へと展開する。すべての窯業基盤となったのは鎌倉以来の伝統を伝える、本業焼である。本業焼とは本来から瀬戸に息づいた陶器の手仕事である。それは歴史が物語るように、その時代背景に必要とされた実用食器を作り続けてきた。仕事は分業制がとられ、作り手は日々繰り返しの修行を重ね、技を競いあった。作られた器は用と美を格調高く備え、器文化の究極を築きあげてきた。約300年の瀬戸本業の歴史がここにある。

Characteristics: For over a thousand years Seto has been producing pottery taking advantage of local clay of the finest quality in its beautiful white color, durability and fire resistance. Since it started producing porcelains in 1800 it has been industrialized, expanding to export toys and develop new ceramics. This successful ceramics industry is based on the traditional Hongyo ware produced since the Kamakura period, 12th century. Practical utensils are produced based on division of labor and potters continue training themselves to improve their methods that result in the beauty of practical vessels.
