大井川葛布　Ōigawa Kudzu-fu Weaving Studio

解説：葛とは日本に自生するマメ科の多年草で、河川の土手や道路脇に多く見かけます。この茎から繊維を取り出し、織り上げたのが「葛布」です。葛布の歴史は大変古く、中国では新石器時代の出土が確認され、日本でも古墳時代のものが発掘されています。戦後、創業した当社は「静岡葛布」として輸出用の葛布壁紙を制作。アメリカ大統領府ホワイトハウスや、アイゼンハワー元大統領の邸宅、欧米のVIPの館に多く使われました。1988年から「大井川葛布」という名称に改め、葛の素材感を生かした物作りをしています。

Characteristics: Kudzu (Japanese arrowroot) is a wild perennial vine of the legume family commonly seen on roadsides and riverbanks. Kudzu-fu cloth is woven with the bast-fiber of this plant and has a long history. The oldest kudzu-fu, found in China, is from the Neolithic Period (around 4325 B.C.). In Japan, kudzu-fu made in the Early Kofun Period (300-538 A.D.) has been excavated. Our original company, Shizuoka Kudzu-fu was established after World War II and produced wallpaper for export. Our products have been installed in many prestigious buildings in Europe and the USA, including the White House and the residence of former President Eisenhower. Today we produce a variety of items taking advantage of the texture of Kudzu-fu.
